Parsonage Street Library

Status: ON SITE

I was commissioned to design a double-height residential library for a central Cambridge cottage. The brief was to extend the existing library into the room's previously unused eaves space. Due to insufficient headspace in the eaves, I opted for a ladder and rail system, alluding to traditional Victorian libraries. This 19th century feature is modernised through its detailing and finishes; the elegant European oak structure rejuvenates the existing shelves, and a bespoke lightweight steel ladder simultaneously acts as a centrepiece, tying the whole project together, and sits back discreetly when not in use. The whole project is fully supported by a steel beam ring, which was previously installed when the ceiling was removed to expose the eaves, giving the impression that the new library effortlessly floats above the existing one. Above the stairwell, where shelves cannot be installed due to access limitations, a custom-made mirror is fitted, making use of an existing skylight to bring more natural light into the space.
